Project: In collaboration with the American Medical Student Association, an online resource for Medical Health Practitioners to help identify when peoples are being trafficked in the Emergency Department.

Role: Designer & Editor I designed the entire site in Squarespace and added in custom code; the 'Back to Top' button on the bottom of every page and the drop down buttons. I also edited all content and rewrote where necessary.

Timeline: 8 months

Clinician &

Clinician Goals: Become educated on how people being trafficked present in the Emergency Department and are equipped with the tools to help them get out of that situation.

Organization Goals: Provide a successful screening tool so that people being trafficked are helped to leave that situation.

Voice: Professional, Clinical, Educational

User Personas

Clinician Persona 1: Brand new clinician in the Emergency Department that is not aware of the human trafficking that occurs in the ED, does not know how to identify it, and does not know how to handle it.

Clinician Persona 2: Experienced clinician in the ED, has strongly suspected patients are being trafficked, but does not know the best way to handle it.

Clinician Persona 3: Senior clinician in the ED, is experienced in dealing with people who are trafficked and present in the ED, and wants to make other clinicians aware of the issue and teach them how to handle it.

User Testing

I conducted user testing with 4 Emergency Department physicians. The key takeaways were to add in dropdown menus on the pages that have a large amount of content, and to separate the case studies onto their own pages.

Challenges

  1. Organizing the large amount of content and curriculum in a way that felt digestible and intuitive to clinicians.

  2. Working with stakeholders:

    1. That aren't in tech and have no foundational knowledge of how websites are built.

    2. That move at a slower pace. Receiving feedback on one aspect of the site design could take up to a month.
